What does it mean to be indigenous today? In the film, The Amerindians, writer Tracy Assing makes a personal exploration of her roots as a member of the Santa Rosa Carib Community based in Arima. The community celebrates the Santa Rosa Festival annually and its Queen Valentina Medina is Assing's great aunt.
We are sharing our journeys with the SEA children who this week carry a deep fear that their future lies in their success or failure in one exam. We have walked in your shoes. We want you to know that your future is in your hands, in your hearts and in your minds.

I left my substantial position at Media and Editorial Projects to pursue my dream of making a documentary about my indigenous heritage in the context of a modern Trinidad and Tobago.
I wasn’t a complete novice, having worked in television production, but there was a lot to learn. With the support of the Trinidad and Tobago Film Company and the Ministry of Culture I completed The Amerindians in 2010 and it premiered at the Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival that same year. Some of my work at Caribbean Beat provided the foundation for the thesis of my documentary, which was a personal exploration of my indigenous heritage and the indigenous story of survival on this island.
I have put my storytelling and interview skills to work crafting stories for film. This work can involve script writing as well as helping others to find their voice, so that they can articulate their own journey.
